Recent reports that more Iranian-designed Shahed drones are being adapted with jet propulsion highlight a troubling reality: warfare is evolving faster than the systems designed to contain it.
As drones become faster, more autonomous and harder to intercept, anti-drone technology must also advance. Yet this creates a dangerous cycle in which enormous human talent, funding and energy are devoted to building more effective weapons and stronger countermeasures.
Artificial intelligence is accelerating that cycle. Autonomous drones and weapons can identify, track and attack targets with reduced human involvement, raising profound ethical, legal and security concerns. The fear is not only what these systems can do today, but what may happen when they are deployed at scale, copied widely or used without meaningful oversight.
Hope must come from international cooperation, enforceable rules and a renewed commitment to human control over lethal decisions. Technology itself is not the enemy; the danger lies in how it is governed and deployed.
Humanity’s future will depend on whether innovation is directed towards protection, diplomacy and peace, rather than increasingly efficient ways of destruction. The question is no longer whether autonomous warfare will shape the future, but whether humanity can shape it before it is too late.
